Conclusion

Jasleen’s work encodes the journeys she herself has undertaken, as well as those of her family, now four generations’ deep in Scotland. Her family’s migration narrative is a defining feature of her creativity and her products. There is a unity in her life; how she lives and how she produces and the connections between her artworks. Her aesthetics and sensibilities are deep-rooted – inherited from her parents and grandparents and great-grandparents. It is a shared source code. Her family’s legacy is fundamentally a part of the objects she designs, consciously encrypted, to encourage further journeys – in the minds of those who observe and discuss them. “Objects tell stories most historians would never write”, she says38 and each object she creates invites its viewers to see the world in a different way.

Growing up in and around a hardware shop, Jasleen acquired both an expertise and familiarity with materials, and also knowledge of selling to customers, understanding what they want and need. But her creative sensibilities, her technical skills and ease of use of materials are also part of her longer-standing maker inheritance, its technical skills enhanced through movement.

And, crucially, her art consists in creating events, as well as objects. Both facilitate conversations and interactions. She creates situations – low-key ones, which overturn the existing order of things. Her art makes strong political statements to break exclusivities and hierarchies through materiality without recourse to verbal gymnastics. Through these interventions, and the often playful attitude she has towards cultural identity, Jasleen questions and transcends cultural boundaries. Like her forebears, Jasleen’s sense of tradition is open not closed, about renewal and reworking, adopting new ways of looking, making and doing in order to create anew. Her artworks are products of her forebears’ migration history, inscribed in her design agendas and aesthetic sensibilities. She self-consciously and explicitly encodes these durable, translatable and transferable inheritances in her daily life, and specifically in her art practice. The past is a source of both inspiration and reassurance as she nods to it – and then leaps to the future.
